Puppies In The Woodpile, Birds in The Blue Jeans

There have been a lot of new births going on around here. No, not new children; this baby factory has shut done. Any additions to our family will have to be imported. ;-}
We unexpectedly became dog owners last fall. Two dogs were dropped off in our yard. These happened to be very cute and friendly. Plus, it makes me feel a little safer on the nights that Mark has to work night shift knowing there are two fierce guard dogs protecting our family. Well, dogs were not in our family budget. We put off having them "fixed". Susan gifted our family with seven puppies on April First. We have a carport that the dogs normally sleep on. Their bowls are there, their blankets are there, it is where the dogs like to just lay around. Did she have the puppies there? No, she did not. She had them out in the open beside this huge woodpile that has been building up for who knows how long. A few days after she had them, it began to rain. Not just a gentle spring rain. A big booming thunderstorm. When I went to check on the puppies I found that Susan had moved them under the giant woodpile. She had dug a little hole at the base of the pile and created a den of sorts. They are still in there. They come out and we play with them and pet them, but then they go back in for their naps and to nurse. We had thought about giving away one of the dogs before so we only had one, now we have nine. How's that for irony?
Now for the birds. We are surrounded by trees. Front yard, back yard, both side yards. Woods behind the backyard, woods and water across the street. I go to get something off my back porch today. There is a box on the porch that has old blue jeans in it. (Ok, I admit, I should have thrown the jeans away already) I bumped the box and a bird flew out of it and into my laundry room. I let out a scream and looked into the box. There among the old jeans was tiny bird's nest. And in the nest was a little mound of eggs. The eggs were so tiny!!!! I guess I just sort of thought that all eggs were the same size as chicken eggs. These were more like the size of jellybeans. Realistically, a little brown bird is tiny compared to a chicken. It stands to reason that the eggs would be smaller, too.
I showed the nest to my kids. They were so amazed. We are excited to check on the baby birds after they hatch. Living in the country does have it advantages.

~Later~
Nathaniel wanted to look at the eggs. We went to the box to see them. I looked to first to make sure the bird was not there. Somehow, I did not see it. So he peeked in. The bird came flying out between our heads.(Nathaniel even got hit by a wing!!)We both screamed like little girls. I guess we like being close to nature, as long as we do not have to get too close!!
